THIS MONTH’S VOLUNTEER: Heather Boyce

BIG SKY BRAVERY WOULDN'T BE WHAT IT IS TODAY WITHOUT THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION OF OUR VOLUNTEERS. TO CELEBRATE THEIR GENEROSITY & INTRODUCE YOU TO SOME INCREDIBLE INDIVIDUALS, WE INVITE YOU TO READ OUR MONTHLY VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN VOLUNTEERING FOR BIG SKY BRAVERY

I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Big Sky Bravery from its beginning phases and I have been deeply intrigued by the organization’s work, always admiring how they provided a vital respite for those who serve our country. My husband and I have also had the opportunity to attend several BSB fundraising events over the years. In the past couple of years, I have been looking for a higher purpose and the combination of witnessing BSB testimonials and the desire to serve others nudged me to become a volunteer with BSB. I have participated in one Spouse Task Force and look forward to my second!

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER FOR BIG SKY BRAVERY?

As mentioned above, I have been looking for a higher purpose for the past couple of years - surely, there is more to this life than the daily grind? The tug in my heart has also collided with experiences in my profession as an RN while observing the effects of PTSD in post-operation members. Seeing the toll it takes on these brave individuals - physically, mentally, and emotionally - is a sobering experience. I’ve witnessed the raw, unspoken pain while their eyes tell a story of memories they can’t escape. I appreciate BSB’s proactive approach to supporting these heroes.

Volunteering allows me to step in and offer support, whether to SOF or their spouses. I hope that together, we can continue to remind these individuals how much they are appreciated and never taken for granted.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST IMPACTFUL MOMENT FOR YOU SINCE BEING INVOLVED WITH BIG SKY BRAVERY?

I think it’s safe to say several moments could be highlighted from a week of 10 strangers living in a house, sharing their deepest fears and struggles, along with many hilarious memories…

However, our Task Force included several women who had never skied before. What started on the bunny slopes for some ended with my partner making the commitment, “I’m going to the top.”

The emotions of riding to the top of the mountain were unmistakable - intense nerves, excitement, and a brief moment of, “What the hell are we doing?” Initially, this endeavor was viewed as a concrete goal, but I witnessed something much more. With each turn, I saw built confidence, the towering peaks creating inspiration, and subtle fears fading into pure exhilaration. When we reached the bottom, I could palpate self-assurance and a deep sense of accomplishment from her - that moment of pure joy and restored confidence is a moment I will never forget!

HOW DOES OUR MOTTO “GIVE MORE THAN YOU TAKE” APPLY TO YOUR LIFE?

To me, “Give More Than You Take” means approaching life with a mindset of selflessness and a desire to contribute to the well-being of others. It’s understanding that fulfillment often comes not from what we receive but from what we’re able to give. With that in mind, I think this can be applied on a large scale, such as BSB, or trickled throughout our day-to-day tasks. Sometimes, it’s a matter of a listening ear…Personally, I take action through my line of work, volunteering for committees within the community, and laying the foundation of this motto within our children.

WHAT DO YOU NO LONGER TAKE FOR GRANTED AFTER SPENDING TIME WITH THE SOF COMMUNITY WE SERVE?

I was fortunate enough to spend my first Task Force with the wives of our SOF members - their commitment and sacrifices to our country are quietly underestimated. These women also make the choice to remain in the fight whenever hardships are brought their way and have learned to navigate the uncertainty of each deployment with a type of strength that can’t adequately be articulated. Our Task Force was met with stories that certainly remind me not to take the time I have with my husband and family for granted.

WHAT JOB TITLE DO YOU HOLD OUTSIDE OF BEING A BIG SKY BRAVERY VOLUNTEER?

Professionally, I’m a Registered Nurse. I also help my husband with his construction business.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE, “WHEN I’M NOT VOLUNTEERING WITH BSB, YOU’LL FIND ME…”

…mostly spinning in circles! As a wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, nurse - life gets a little busy. However, I most enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters, Olivia (11) and Hallee (7). We are currently in the season of “kids’ sports.” So, you will likely find us on the soccer field, volleyball court, or on the mountain skiing.
